The overall objective of the first phase of the BlackCarbon project has been to determine whether the black carbon content of snow and ice can be retrieved from satellite data. If this could be verified, it was foreseen to outline ideas for algorithms for black carbon retrieval in snow and ice from satellite data and to propose a main project to follow on.
